Have you ever walked down the lakefront in Chicago? Have you ever shopped in the Magnificent Mile? Have you ever driven on the highway, or visited one of Chicago's many parks? These are all cases of you doing something that would not have happened without the Burnham Plan. “The Plan’s significance rests in the fact that it helped convince so many people at the time and since, including some of its critics, of the truth of this contention.” (Smith, Carl. “The Plan of Chicago.”) It was extremely important to the city of Chicago, and The Burnham Plan of Chicago broke physical and social barriers by adding and creating new spaces, widening new avenues for revenue and use, and reintroducing the city, not just to industry, but also to the people, which created the spirit of Chicago. The Burnham plan caused multiple acres of land to be created on the lakeshore, and also caused over 100 miles of streets to be widened. It also caused many parks to be build, and opened the eyes of the public to see how they could improve the city, and how, in the future, we still can.
